A popular historic tourist attraction has received an
award for its access facilities, including British Sign Language
(BSL) audio tours.
The Roman Baths in the city of Bath was "Highly Commended",
receiving the Access for All award at the South West Tourism
Excellence Awards 2011/2012. The award was given in recognition of
recent development work carried out to improve access and create a
better experience for people with a range of different needs,
includinghearing loss.
Along with its facilities for foreign language speakers and
blind or visually impaired visitors, the site has introduced a BSL
audio tour which looks just like the regular equipment used to
provide information. This type of hand-held guide eliminates the
need to deface the important historical site with large information
boards.
The award was officially presented to the Roman Baths team at a
prominent awards ceremony in February by TV travel writer Simon
Calder.
Councillor Cherry Beath, cabinet member for sustainable
development at Bath and North East Somerset Council, said that the
award shows the council's commitment to making the already
exceedingly popular tourist attraction fully accessible to enable
enjoyment for everyone. She added: "Understanding of the ancient
monument has […] become easier for our visitors with new displays
and improved interpretation throughout, and there is a wide range
of visual prompts that everyone can recognise."
