 Welcome

BC at receptionOne of our colleagues will first welcome you, offer you a cup of tea or coffee and settle you into the sound-controlled hearing test room. Your hearing aid audiologist will ask you questions about your health, hearing, and lifestyle.  This will not only determine if your hearing loss is likely to be caused by age, illness, occupation or hobbies but also indicate the situations that any hearing aids will need to cope with, if you need them.

Ear examination

YDispenser using Otoscopeour hearing aid audiologist will look into your ear with an instrument called an otoscope to see if there is any damage or obstruction that may be affecting your hearing. If we find anything that needs medical treatment, we will recommend that you see an appropriate medical specialist and we will write a letter of referral for you.

Hearing test

Test - headphonesThe hearing test is usually carried out using an audiometer. You will sit in a sound-treated room and wear headphones along with a small vibrating pad behind each ear to measure the sound waves that pass directly to the inner ear. Various tones are then played and you indicate when these can be heard.

As the test progresses your hearing aid audiologist plots a graph which shows the details of your hearing loss. This is called an audiogram.

Solution

If you do not have a hearing loss, the hearing aid audiologist will recommend that you come back for another test in approximately two years' time.

Test - Discussing resultsIf you do have a hearing loss, the hearing aid audiologist will take time to discuss the best options and styles of hearing aid to suit your needs and will recommend the most suitable hearing aids for your hearing problem and your lifestyle. If you choose to progress and prefer to have hearing aids that fit in the ear (rather than behind the ear), the hearing aid audiologist will take a mould of your ear and send it away so that your hearing aid is a perfect fit.

Experience the difference

If your hearing test has shown that you have a hearing loss the hearing aid audiologist will provide you with the opportunity to experience a live hearing aid demonstration so you can hear the difference it can make to your hearing and how it feels to wear hearing aids.

Test - Showing small aidDepending on the type of hearing aid your hearing aid audiologist recommends, the demonstration may only give you a general idea of how much hearing aids could help - for example, most hearing aids are programmed individually so they would improve your hearing much more than you could experience with a sample aid during your hearing consultation.

If you choose to order your hearing aids, you will be given an appointment date to come back and have your hearing aids fitted. At this time he will also explain how to look after your hearing aids and tel you all about our comprehensive free Lifetime Aftercare programme.
